December 2022 Portfolio Update
January 01, 2023 - 9:14 amWe beat the S&P by 23% in the Long Portfolio for 2022, and we're proud of the return and performance throughout the year! It wasn't an easy year but we had plenty of conviction in our positions and the overall strategy. We were still somewhat tech heavy, but we bought stocks that were either beaten down, had great fundamentals like CELH, and we were also patient with some of the trades throughout the year.
Moderna was up and down and we definitely could have sold at better times, but we held on through the troughs and still made great profits. The composition of the portfolio is solid going into 2023, and we also have about 9% in cash. The new year will be tougher as recession risks will dominate the headlines, the Ukraine conflict will not have an end in sight, geopolitical risks will weigh heavy, and US politics will always be a wildcard. The reality is that the US market is in a downtrend, so the Long portfolio has to continue finding undervalued stocks and trends that are in a secular bull market amongst themselves against a backdrop of layoffs, recession and lower earnings.
We're up the challenge again and as a reminder in the two years we've run this portflio we/ve returned 85% in 2021, and 5.6% in 2022, crushing the S&P in both years!
